Kay Johnson Hazelwood was born in Texas City, Texas, but was raised on the East Coast, returning to Texas in 1970. In 1982 she graduated from Trinity University in San Antonio with a bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology. In 1985, she graduated from South Texas College of Law, magna cum laude, was selected Order of the Lytae and received numerous appellate advocacy awards. Kay was also selected for the South Texas College of Law, Law Review. Kay practiced with the Houston office of Reynolds, White, Allen & Cook from 1985 through 1988. She left Reynolds White Allen & Cook in 1988, along with Ed Junell, and joined the litigation section of Andrews & Kurth, L.L.P. until 1992. Kay joined Schwartz, Junell, Greenberg & Oathout, L.L.P. in September 2001.

Kay's practice is focused on complex commercial litigation, handling numerous oil and gas disputes and other real estate or business related disputes. Kay has also briefed numerous appeals for the Texas Courts of Appeals, and the Texas Supreme Court. Kay is licensed to practice before all Texas state courts and United States District Courts for the Southern, Eastern, and Northern District of Texas. She is also a member of the Houston Bar Association and is active in numerous community organizations, including the Service League of Baytown and Westminster Presbyterian Church.
